This forty-five hour course has five units. It mainly covers strategies for literacy teaching and learning. The areas covered in this course include Literacy for Personal and National Development, Early Literacy Development, Prior Knowledge, Word Recognition and Vocabulary Development. A number of teaching methods are used in the delivery of this course; these include micro-teaching, lectures, slide presentations, group research, discovery learning and demonstrations. The course is assessed by coursework only. The students are assessed based on micro-teaching, oral presentations, item creation and an in-course test. The lecturer acts as a facilitator and model and the student teachers are active participants in the learning process.
