Course Description

The intention of this module is to improve the performance and technical understanding of the students with the basic knowledge of learn to swim and FINA rules. Initially, priority will be placed on water confidence and the application of fundamentals of swimming. As the module progresses students will be required to apply fundamentals to the freestyle and backstroke whilst increasing their knowledge and understanding of swimming and water based activities. As the students swimming skills improve, they will be required to turn their attention from their own swimming performance to the teaching and learning processes of teaching swimming. The module will require the students to maintain a reflective journal of ‘how’ to teach swimming content by writing up lecture content and considering more varied approaches to the delivery of swimming. Thy will also be required to officiate at an ASAJ swimming competition.


Students, will be introduced the SWIMJAMAICA programme depending on their swimming abilities and will be prepared to progress to one of the three levels of SWIMJAMAICA instructor courses, which may be at the lowest level, an assistant instructor or, at the highest level, an Advanced Instructor who is able to teach all levels of the programme.
