This course is designed to reinforce the essentials of effective verbal and non-verbal communication and develop expository writing skills, which are germane to success in academic writing. Through the three broad units; ‘Effective Communication’, ‘Expository Writing’ and ‘Comprehension’, students are given opportunities to develop awareness of the rudiments of Standard English. This is honed through active engagements in authentic contexts such as genre analysis, process writing, proofreading tasks, analysis of national/social events and collaborative opportunities. The course promotes a balance of power as the lecturers act as facilitators while the student teachers take responsibility for their learning by being involved in content identification, demonstrations, presentations and constructive feedback.
