Course Description

This course provides an overview of methodologies used in teaching learners with special needs from early childhood onwards, with an emphasis on students with “high incidence” disabilities. The course is designed to provide student-teachers with a range of instructional strategies for working with students with special needs. They will be exposed to teaching, learning, and classroom management strategies, to facilitate students with different learning needs. These include, but are not limited to direct teaching and adapting materials based on the nine types of adaptations. In addition, student-teachers will be guided in:

  • creating an inclusive classroom,
  • adapting and supplementing classroom materials,
  • making assessment accommodations.

These require an understanding of the subject matter, classroom assessment, effective teaching, and the challenge of the individualized programming for students with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

This course will be delivered using a variety of instructional strategies including, but  not limited to lectures, video presentations, student presentations, demonstrations, discussions on assigned readings, and self-reflection.
