About the Department
The Department of Physical Education offers individuals the opportunity to pursue a Bachelor of Education with Specialization in Physical Education. It is full time four year program with a minimum of 135 credits. It includes 66 credits from the specialized area, 24 credits from General Education, 30 credit from the Professional Studies and 15 credits from Practicum. Students are also encouraged to complete at least 2 elective which is offered by other departments in the University College. Students who access the programme with a teaching diploma in Physical Education are required to complete a minimum of 66 credits.
Minimum Requirements
5 CSEC subjects which must include these 4:
- Mathematics
- English Language
- Physical Education
- any other Science Subject
N.B Persons not having CSEC Physical Education but have participated in sports at the ISSA and/or national level will be accepted with 5 CSEC subjects excluding Physical Education.
What to Expect
Service learning and community engagement are key features of this degree. In all four years of the programme you will be given service learning opportunities and work within educational, health and sporting organizations. Students will be placed at healthcare centres within the corporate area, assist in the organization and execution of sport events in schools, corporate Jamaica, and ISSA Boys and Girls championships, to name a few.
Graduate Opportunities
The Bachelor of Education with specialization in Physical Education provides a qualification to teach in the secondary schools. Although the focus of this degree is on teacher education, as a graduate it also enables you to work in corporate entities, health sector, recreation and sporting industry. Graduates are afforded the opportunity to further their studies at the post graduate level.
